Police are looking for a woman who dressed as a man and drew a beard on her face with black marker pen to rob a gas station in California.

What looks like a man with a beanie hat pulled over his head approaches the counter and threatens the cashier at the gas station in Modesto.

But, under the baggy clothes and painted-on facial hair is actually a woman.

 ‘This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen, ever heard and witnessed on my camera system,’ gas station owner Sanjay Sharma told local station Fox40.

‘I used to say that nothing would surprise me, but this has.’

The suspect, who was 5’5”, managed to intimidate the cashier with a gun tucked into the waistband of her trousers.

However, as the cashier at the gas station did not have access to the safe, the armed robber only made off with about $30.

In a final twist the bizarre robbery, the surveillance video shows the suspect fleeing the scene on a getaway bicycle.

Police are offering a $1000 reward to anyone who can identify the suspect they are calling the ‘bearded bandit lady’.

Mr Applegate said: ‘If anyone sees a woman that matches this description that has some dark black marks on her face, where it looks like she painted her face, there's a pretty good chance she could be our suspect here.’
